With the Kentucky Derby coming this weekend, it’s the perfect time to stock up on Mint Julep Cups. Ideally, you’ll want one that’s silver (although bronze is another option), holds 12 ounces, has some heft in your hand, and looks like it’s ready for a Derby party.
And, of course, what’s the point of having the Mint Julep Cup, if you can’t fill it with an amazing cocktail?
Mint Julep Cocktail
The traditional Derby Day cocktail, and a southern ritual crafted from great bourbon, simple syrup and mint.
INGREDIENTS
2 oz. Woodford Reserve
1/2 oz. Simple Syrup
3 Fresh Mint Leaves
Crushed Ice
INSTRUCTIONS
Express the essential oils in the mint and rub them inside the glass. To the same glass, add simple syrup, bourbon, and crushed ice. Stir. Garnish with more ice and fresh mint.
Did you know? Each year, almost 120,000 Mint Juleps are served over the two-day period of Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby weekend at Churchill Downs Racetrack. That’s a feat that requires more than 10,000 bottles of Old Forester Mint Julep Ready-to-Serve Cocktail, 1,000 pounds of freshly harvested mint and 60,000 pounds of ice.
