Apple Put Its Best AirPods Trick in the Pair That Costs $129

Apple has spent years making the useful AirPods features climb the price ladder. AirPods 5 reverse that traffic. The company’s least expensive new earbuds now include active noise cancellation, which is the kind of decision that makes an upgrade feel less like a tax audit.

The standard pair costs $129 and uses a new multiport acoustic design with next-generation Adaptive EQ. Apple says the open-ear noise cancellation removes up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. Transparency mode remains available when you need the world back, and Adaptive Audio can blend the two modes as conditions change.

There is also Live Translation, hands-free access to Siri AI and head gestures for answering prompts. Nod yes, shake no, and try not to look like you are silently arguing with an invisible committee. The buds add better resistance to dust, sweat and water, and Apple says 40 percent of their material is recycled.

The company confirmed that AirPods 5 arrived in stores on September 18. Two versions are available. The $129 model uses a USB-C charging case and delivers up to four hours of listening with ANC. Spend $149 and the case gains wireless charging, total ANC listening stretches to as much as 22 hours, and the stems get volume-swipe controls.

  • Availability: On sale now
  • Audio: Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency and Adaptive Audio
  • Smart features: Live Translation, Siri AI and head-gesture responses
  • Premium-model extras: Volume swipe, wireless charging and longer battery life

Why It’s Cool

The interesting part is not that AirPods gained more software. Apple products collect software features the way workbenches collect mystery screws. The surprise is that ANC now starts at $129, making the basic model the value play rather than the pair you tolerate until the good one goes on sale.

The $149 version still looks like the smarter buy for heavy daily use because wireless charging and on-stem volume control solve annoyances you will encounter constantly. But both versions deliver the feature that matters most: quiet when you want it without sealing your ears with silicone tips. That is a very Apple trick, except this time the price is not the punchline.
